Recovering after surgery

Lymphatic drainage after surgery can help to speed up the recovery process. Indeed, we have found that more and more of our clients want to know more about it.

But first, let’s have a brief look at how surgery affects the body in the first place.

How surgery affects the body

Certainly, it stands to reason, that surgery will cause a shock to the body in the short to medium term. And because of this, it is important to keep in mind that the healing process is as important as the surgery itself. The type and scale of the surgery you have will affect the extent and impact of the side effects.

For the sake of this article, we are focusing on the impact of plastic surgery procedures.

  • It goes without saying that you will need to overcome some initial pain. After that, fatigue and a loss of appetite are very common.
  • Then, there are the physical side effects. These can include swelling, numbness, bruising, and possibly bleeding.
  • Whilst the aim of surgery is to help you improve in the long term, the incisions that are made cause short-term injury to the body.
  • The body becomes inflamed at a site of an injury. This is natures way of helping you to heal.

Lymphatic drainage after surgery is an excellent way to help combat these responses.

How to schedule Lymphatic Drainage after surgery

Once you commit to having plastic surgery, you need to plan for your recovery in advance.

There is an optimal time in which to factor in Lymphatic Drainage. Ideally, you need to receive your first treatment as soon as possible after surgery.

Depending on how quickly you are allowed home, it makes sense to book that first session within 24 hours of treatment if you can.

After that, we would recommend scheduling in a further 6 to 12 follow up sessions. This will help to optimise your healing and ensure your lymphatic system operates normally.

Obviously, this is quite a commitment to make. However, a proper programme of Lymphatic Drainage could help you avoid the need for further surgery. That in itself should help to justify the investment.

So how will Lymphatic Drainage help?

The key role of the lymphatic system is to gather excess fluid from tissues. It then purifies it and returns it to the bloodstream.

Lymphatic massage improves the efficiency of your lymphatic system. It can also boost circulation. It helps redirect fluid into parts of the body where there is a high concentration of lymph nodes. Typically these are areas such as the armpits or groin.

The good news is that a Lymphatic massage uses light and gentle movements. The treatment itself should not be too painful.

It is especially useful post surgery because it helps speed up the Lymphatic system. This, in turn, helps to remove toxins and waste products. Above all, it can play a vital role in reducing swelling, which is ideal for a speedy recovery.

  • Lea says:

I just had a facial surgery and am on antibiotics. Is it safe to have a lymph treatment

    • Hi Lea,
Yes it is. antibiotics are just to prevent any infection. Lymphatic drainage doesn’t interfere with antibiotic.
